Golden Triangle Tour from USA: Itinerary, Price and Best Dates

A private Golden Triangle tour from the USA starts from USD 467 per person with 3-star hotels, USD 595 with 4-star hotels, and USD 825 with 5-star hotels. Each includes a private driver and guide across Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. The best months are October to March. Most Americans fly into Delhi (DEL), allow 1 to 2 days to recover from jet lag, and finish the tour in 5 to 7 days.

This guide covers the itinerary, what the price includes, when to go, and the details US travelers usually miss.

What Is the Golden Triangle Tour?

The Golden Triangle is India's classic first-time circuit. It links three cities in a loop of about 720 km:

•
Delhi: the capital, with Mughal monuments, Old Delhi markets and colonial-era New Delhi.
•
Agra: home of the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and the "Baby Taj" (Itmad-ud-Daulah).
•
Jaipur: the Pink City of Rajasthan, with Amber Fort, palaces and bazaars.

It suits Americans because the distances are short, hotels and guides are well established, and a private driver handles everything. You see three very different sides of India without a single internal flight.

How Many Days Do You Need?

Trip length

Best for

What you get

4 days / 3 nights

Short on time, or adding India to an Asia trip

Core sights only; a lot of driving

5-6 days

Most first-timers

A relaxed pace, Fatehpur Sikri, Jaipur markets

7-8 days

Wildlife lovers

Adds a Ranthambore tiger safari

9-10 days

Culture-focused travelers

Adds Pushkar, Udaipur, Varanasi or a Delhi rest day

Our advice: plan at least 5 days of touring, plus 1 buffer day. A 14 to 16-hour flight and a 9.5 to 10.5-hour time difference from the US East Coast can wipe out your first day.

6-Day Golden Triangle Itinerary for US Travelers

Day 1: Arrive in Delhi

Most US flights land late at night or in the early morning. Your driver meets you at Indira Gandhi International Airport (Terminal 3) and takes you to the hotel. Rest and sleep. Plan no sightseeing.

Day 2: Old and New Delhi

•
Humayun's Tomb: a UNESCO World Heritage site and the forerunner of the Taj Mahal's design.
•
Qutub Minar: a 73-metre 12th-century minaret.
•
India Gate and Rashtrapati Bhavan: seen on the drive through Lutyens' Delhi.
•
Old Delhi: a cycle rickshaw ride through Chandni Chowk, plus Jama Masjid. Try street food only if you are comfortable with it.

Plan 6 to 7 hours. A later start avoids the worst of the heat in summer.

Day 3: Delhi to Agra (about 230 km, 3.5 to 4 hours)

Drive the Yamuna Expressway. After check-in, visit Agra Fort, then watch the Taj from Mehtab Bagh at sunset across the river. It is quieter than the main complex.

Day 4: Sunrise Taj Mahal, then Fatehpur Sikri and on to Jaipur (about 240 km, 5 hours)

Enter the Taj at opening, about 30 minutes before sunrise, when crowds are thinnest. After breakfast, stop at Itmad-ud-Daulah, then Fatehpur Sikri, Akbar's abandoned red-sandstone capital. Break the drive to Jaipur at Chand Baori, the dramatic stepwell in Abhaneri.

Day 5: Jaipur

•
Amber Fort: take the jeep or walk up. We don't recommend elephant rides on animal-welfare grounds.
•
Hawa Mahal (photo stop), City Palace and Jantar Mantar, the 18th-century astronomical observatory.
•
Evening at the bazaars for block-print textiles, jewelry and blue pottery.

Day 6: Jaipur to Delhi (about 280 km, 5 to 6 hours)

Drive back for a late-evening international departure. Leave Jaipur by 9 am to avoid traffic near Delhi.

Want tigers? Add 2 days for Ranthambore National Park between Agra and Jaipur. The safari season runs October to June, and the park closes during the monsoon.

Hotel category

Price per person

Standard (3-star)

The hotel category is the main thing that changes the price. The route, private car and guides stay the same. Solo travelers pay a single supplement.

What the price normally includes

•
Private air-conditioned car and driver for the whole route
•
English-speaking, government-approved guides in each city
•

Tips

Edit these two lists to match your exact inclusions. If tickets or meals are included, say so, because it is a strong selling point.

Budget for extras

•
Taj Mahal ticket: the official rate for foreign visitors is ₹1,100, plus an optional ₹200 for the inner mausoleum chamber. Online booking gives a small discount.
•
Tips: keep $5 to $10 per day for the driver and about $10 to $15 per day for the guide, in cash.
•
Meals: about $8 to $15 per person for a good restaurant meal.

Best Time for a Golden Triangle Tour from the USA

Month

Weather

What to know

Oct-Nov

20-32°C, clear

Start of peak season. Diwali falls in early November in 2026, so book hotels early.

Dec-Jan

5-20°C, cold mornings

Fog can hide the sunrise at the Taj and delay roads. Great for Jaipur.

Feb-Mar

15-30°C

Often the best balance of weather and crowds.

Apr-Jun

35-45°C

Hot. Sightsee early morning only. Good for tiger sightings in Ranthambore.

Jul-Sep

Monsoon

Fewer tourists, green landscapes, but humid and rainy.

Dates to plan around

•
Fridays: the Taj Mahal is closed to general visitors every Friday. Build your Agra day around that.
•
Republic Day (26 January): road closures in Delhi.
•
Holi (March): colorful, but many monuments and shops shut for a day.

Visa, Flights and Jet Lag

Do US citizens need a visa for India?

Yes. Apply for the Indian e-Visa online at the official portal, indianvisaonline.gov.in, at least 4 days before travel. Current government fees for US citizens are:

•
30-day e-Tourist: $25 (July to March) or $10 (April to June)
•
1-year e-Tourist: $40

A bank charge of about 3% is added. Fees for longer visas are reported differently across sources, so check the portal before you pay. You must also complete the free e-Arrival card before landing. Avoid third-party sites that charge several times the government fee.

Flights to Delhi

Nonstop flights operate from New York/Newark and some other US hubs on certain carriers. Check current schedules, because routes change. The journey is about 14 to 16 hours. Otherwise you connect once via Europe or the Gulf.

Jet lag

India is 9.5 hours ahead of New York in summer and 10.5 hours in winter. Two things help:

1. Book your first hotel night from the day you land, so you can check in early
2. Keep day 2 light.

Practical Tips for American Travelers

•
Power: India uses Type C, D and M sockets at 230V. Bring a universal adapter.
•
Money: carry some rupees for tips and small purchases. ATMs in cities are reliable.
•
Phone: an eSIM bought before you leave is the easiest option.
•
Health: check the CDC's India page and see a travel clinic 4 to 6 weeks before departure. Drink bottled or filtered water.
•
Clothing: cover shoulders and knees at temples and mosques. Slip-on shoes help.
•
Safety: this is India's most visited tourist route and works well with a private guide and driver. Ignore touts, agree prices before any ride, and keep valuables out of sight.

Private Tour or Group Tour?

A private tour lets you set the pace, skip stops, and add a photo session or a cooking class. A group tour is cheaper per person but fixed in schedule and stops. For first-timers and families, private is usually worth the difference.
