1. Munnar, Kerala

Munnar is a hill station in the Western Ghats, known for tea estates and cool weather. The main attraction nearby is Eravikulam National Park, about 13-15 km from town, home to the endangered Nilgiri tahr. Entry is on foot via the Rajamalai gate. The park is closed during February and March every year, so plan around that. Anamudi, South India's highest peak at 2,695 m, lies inside the park, and climbing it needs special permission.

2. Alleppey (Alappuzha), Kerala

Alleppey is the best-known base for the Kerala backwaters, where houseboats cruise Punnamada Lake, Vembanad Lake and the canals of Kuttanad. A typical overnight houseboat checks in around 12 noon and checks out around 9 am the next day. Boats usually anchor by about 5:30 pm, and late-night cruising on the lake is not allowed. Mid-range boats are listed at roughly ₹7,000-20,000 per night for two, so confirm what is included, especially air-conditioning hours. 3. Coorg (Kodagu), Karnataka

Coorg is known for coffee estates, mist and waterfalls such as Abbey Falls. Raja's Seat in Madikeri is a favourite sunset point. Near Kushalnagar, the Namdroling Monastery at Bylakuppe, often called the Golden Temple, is a large Tibetan Buddhist monastery. The Dubare elephant camp is another popular stop.

Best time: October to March. The monsoon is green but very wet.

4. Hampi, Karnataka

Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire. Its boulder-strewn landscape holds the Virupaksha Temple, the Vittala Temple with its famous stone chariot, the Lotus Mahal and the Elephant Stables. Sunrise or sunset from a hilltop is a popular way to see the site. The nearest railhead is Hosapete (Hospet). Hampi is a good fit for travellers interested in heritage sites.

5. Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu

Kodaikanal sits in the Palani Hills and is built around Kodai Lake. Popular stops include Coaker's Walk, Pillar Rocks, Bryant Park and Green Valley View. It is a calmer alternative to bigger hill stations.

Best time: March to June for pleasant days, or September to November for fewer crowds. Winter is cool and misty.

6. Wayanad, Kerala

Varkala is known for its beach below a red laterite cliff, lined with cafes and guesthouses. The cliff is a protected geological monument. The Janardhana Swamy Temple and the quieter Papanasam beach are nearby. It is a relaxed place to end a Kerala trip.

9. Pondicherry (Puducherry)

Puducherry is a union territory with a French colonial past. Its White Town has tree-lined streets and yellow-and-white colonial buildings, and the seafront Promenade is a popular evening walk. 10. Bengaluru, Karnataka

Bengaluru (formerly Bangalore) is South India's main entry point and has a mild climate.
