Overview Aoleang Monyu Festival Package

MONOLITH FESTIVAL Physical cultural features like Music, Crafts and Costumes offer a window to the rich cultural mélange of Meghalaya. The qualities of the Khasis are further revealed through Folk songs which are sung during and for various occasions such as birth, marriage, festivals, love and heroic deeds accompanied by various types of drums and flutes. They are also performed to praise the many elements of nature like hills, lakes, waterfalls, rivers as they express their love for the land which gives life and sustenance to the people. The indigenous people of the state are known for weaving cane mat, stools and baskets and have their own distinct costumes as well; however, with the passage of time, the males took to the western code of everyday dressing; the ladies have been able to retain the tradition of maintaining their ethnic sartorial elegance. Monolith is an attempt of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) to bring together these rich cultural traditions at one venue for a visitor to be able to sample music, dance, food and pure tribal life in one place and at their convenience. This festival is the first ever Cultural Extravaganza to showcase and display many of the unique traditions through dances, music handicrafts, cuisines, attires etc of the Khasi Tribe of Meghalaya. The festival will be held at a permanent and attractive tourist village with authentic traditional architecture to accommodate visitors and also offer them a lingering experience of the rural village atmosphere and lifestyle. AOLEANG MONYU is the main festival of the Konyaks. It is celebrated every year in the spring season i.e. after the sowing of seeds. The festival lasts from 1st to 6th April. This festival is celebrated to ask for blessings from God “Yongwan” for a bumper harvest for the year. Young and old in traditional dresses and headgears decorated with feathers and wild boar tusks, accompanied with log drums chant folk songs and have a merry time with great feasting.
