Golden Temple in Amritsar
This temple is synonymous with the state of Punjab. Situated in Amritsar, the temple gets a lot of visitors every day. The dome of the temple is made up of gold, hence the name of the temple. The Sikhs consider this temple as one of the most sacred spots for pilgrimage in the state. The famous Maharaja of Punjab, Ranjit Singh, had donated all the gold required to cover the dome. There are a lot of other temples around this temple. There is a pool in front of the temple which was constructed under the supervision of Guru Ram das who was the fourth Sikh Guru. The communal canteen of the temple, better known as the langar, provides food free of cost to all people. There is no discrimination based on caste, religion or gender. This famous border between India and Pakistan is visited by millions of tourists every year. There is an outpost of the Indian army at Wagah. This place is famous for the "Beating the Retreat" ceremony. The Wagah Border Ceremony timings are fixed depending on the time when the sunsets. During winter the time is 4:30 pm and it is an hour later during the summer season. The tourists visiting this place need to keep in mind the Wagah Border Ceremony timings.
