Biratnagar is Nepal's second-largest city and the only with a six-figure population outside the Kathmandu valley. It lies 23 km south of Itahari on the Mahendra Highway and is Biratnagar the district headquarters of Morang. It is Nepal's foremost industrial town and the road from Itahari is lined with small factories and industrial units including timber and agricultural processing and textile production. The large production of its industry is owned by Marwari Indians.

 

Biratnagar is an important center for flights in eastern Nepal. Flights to Taplejung and Bhojpur fly from the airport in Biratnagar. People traveling to Dharan and other eastern parts of the country also rely on this short flight. From here Kakarvitta, the eastern entry point to Nepal is a short drive away.
