The Ashokan Pillar is situated in the Rupandehi district of South Nepal. It is one of the lots of stone pillars erected by the Indian Emperor in the course of his regime in the 3rd century BC. There are only 19 pillars left that have engravings. Most of those pillars are found in India. The pillar situated in Nepal is the most ancient of all. It also memorializes and represents Asoka's visit to the birthplace of Buddha after he embraced Buddhism.
The Asokan Pillar is the most remarkable monument and a pure historic birthplace of Lord Buddha in Lumbini. The inscriptions chiselled by Emperor Asoka are still unscathed and bears testimony to the legitimacy of his birthplace. The engravings on the Asokan Pillar describes the Sacred Garden – extended over 9 sq km. – as the place where the Enlightenment One was born.
There is a divine Pushkarini pond in the hallowed site of Lumbini. This is where queen Mayadevi cleansed herself before giving birth to the spiritual child. There are terraced steps around the pond and it is adorned with magnificently layered bricks.
